THE HONOURABLE THE CHIEF JUSTICE TOURS COURTS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND REHABILITATION

The Honourable the Chief Justice Andrew K.C. Nyirenda in the month of September, 2020 took time off from his busy office duties to tour some of the courts under construction and rehabilitation and extension in the Eastern, Central and Northern Regions. During the tour the Honourable the Chief Justice was accompanied by the Chief Courts Administrator, Mrs. Edith Chikagwa, respective Chief Resident Magistrates, His Worship Mzonde Mvula in the Eastern Region, Her Worship Mrs. Violet Chipao in the Central Region and Her Worship Mrs. Gladys Gondwe in the Northern Region, the Chief Maintenance Officer, Mr. Glyn Chirwa and Principal Courts Administrators Mrs. Mervis Kaphinde for Eastern Region, Mr. Phunziro Kwisongole for Central Region and Regional Courts Administrator Mr. Hytone Kadyamo for Northern Region.

The first stop was Monkey-Bay Magistrate Court in the Eastern Region.  Government of Malawi is funding the construction of the court. The court has two court rooms, two magistrates’ chambers, facilities for people living with disability, Prosecutors’/Counsels’ waiting room, Court Users lounge and spacious offices among other things.

From Monkey-Bay the Honourable the Chief Justice toured Nkhota-kota Magistrate Court in the Central Region. European Union under Chilungamo Programme funded the rehabilitation and Extension of Nkhota-kota Magistrate Court. The Court which previously had one court room now boasts of two courtrooms.

 

From the Central Region the Honourable the Chief Justice proceeded to Karonga in the Northern Region. Karonga Magistrate Court has been rehabilitated with funding from the Malawi Government. Major works at Karonga were replacement of the roof and painting.

Finally, the Honourable Chief Justice Andrew K.C. Nyirenda travelled back to the Central Region where he toured Mponela Magistrate Court in Dowa. When finished, Mponela Magistrate Court will have two court rooms, two magistrates’ chambers, facilities for people living with disability, Prosecutors’/Counsels’ waiting room, Court Users lounge and spacious offices just like Monkey-Bay Magistrate Court,

During the tour the Honourable the Chief Justice Andrew K.C. Nyirenda urged all officers and staff at the courts to take good care of the court structures.
