Malawi Judiciary is one of the seven beneficiary institutions of the Chilungamo Programme (Justice and Accountability Programme) funded by the European Union (EU).
In pursuit of achieving one of the Chilungamo Programme (Justice and Accountability) objectives which is to increase access to justice for all, EU will rehabilitate ten (10) magistrate courts. One of the courts that has been rehabilitated under the Programme is Chitipa District Magistrate Court.
Before the rehabilitation Chitipa Magistrate court had few offices and the structure was dilapidated. The rehabilitation has seen an increase in the number of chambers from two to three, an increased number of offices, extended court rooms and general facelift of the court. The development has led Chitipa to be upgraded from First Grade Magistrate Court to Senior Resident Magistrate Court automatically increasing the jurisdiction of the court.
The newly rehabilitated court is due for occupation on 1st June 2021, ahead of the official handover ceremony to be graced by the Honourable the Chief Justice, EU dignitaries and other justice sector stakeholders.
The Judiciary is excited about this yet milestone.
