Subordinate Courts

The Subordinates Courts of Malawi has unlimited original jurisdiction to hear and determine any civil or criminal proceedings. It also hears appeals on matters from the Subordinate Courts. It is presided over by a single judge with the exception of constitutional cases. Its Divide into Magistrate Courts, Industrial Relations Courts and Child justice Courts.

Magistrate Courts

Handles both criminal and civil matters limited to their authorized powers. Magistrates Courts are divided into five grades namely Resident Magistrates Courts, First Grade Magistrate Courts, Second Grade Magistrate Courts,Third Magistrate Courts and Forth Magistrate Courts. The powers of each Court vary according to grade.

Industrial Relations Courts

This is where the High Court sits with not less than three judges in matters expressly and substantively relating to or concerning the interpretation or application of the provisions of the law

Child Justice Courts

This is where the High Court sits with not less than three judges in matters expressly and substantively relating to or concerning the interpretation or application of the provisions of the law
