His Lordship Honourable Chief Justice Rizine R. Mzikamanda, SC

Chief Justice of the Republic of Malawi.

Honourable Justice Mzikamanda

The Honourable Chief Justice Rizine R. Mzikamanda, SC was born on 30th November,1958. He is married and has six children. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi (1983) and a Master of Laws from Hull University, England (1992).

His Lordship Mzikamanda started his career in the Judiciary in 1983 as a Resident Magistrate and rose to the ranks of Principal Resident Magistrate and Chief Resident Magistrate before he was appointed Deputy Registrar and later Senior Deputy Registrar of the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal. He was appointed Judge of the High Court in 1997 and Justice of Appeal in 2012. He was appointed the Chief Justice on 7th January,2022.

 

His Lordship Honourable Justice Lovemore P. Chikopa, SC

Chikopa

Honourable Justice Lovemore P. Chikopa, SC was born on 9th August,1965. He is married and has children. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi (1987) and has a Master of Business Administration degree with the University of Zambia (2021).

 He started his career in the Judiciary in 1998 as Principal Resident Magistrate having previously served as State Advocate in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. He also worked in private sector with SEDOM and in private legal practice before joining the Office of the Ombudsman as Principal Investigations Officer/Acting Chief Legal Officer. He was appointed Judge of the High Court in 2000 and Justice of Appeal in 2012.

 In 2012, he was appointed by the Government of Zambia to lead a Tribunal which investigated the alleged misconduct of three High Court Judges in Zambia where he served until August,2017.

 

His Lordship Justice Frank E. Kapanda, SC

Kapanda

The Honourable Justice Frank E. Kapanda, SC was born on 24th June, 1963. He is married and has two children. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi (1990) and a Master of Law degree from the University of Cape Town (2014). 

 He started his career in the Judiciary in 1998 as Principal Resident Magistrate having previously served as Lands Officer in the Ministry of Lands, Legal Practitioner in private legal practice and as an in-house lawyer in the Department of Customs and Excise. He was appointed Judge of the High Court in 2000 and Justice of Appeal in 2013.

 

His Lordship Justice Healey S.B. Potani  

Potani

The Honourable Justice Healey S.B. Potani was born on 30th July, 1964. He is married and has children. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi (1989).

He joined the Judiciary on 12th June, 1989 as a Resident Magistrate and rose to the rank of Principal Resident Magistrate before he was appointed Deputy Registrar and later Registrar of the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal. He was appointed Judge of the High Court on 20th March, 2003 and Justice of Appeal on 20th October, 2020.

He was the chairperson of the panel of judges which sat on the constitutional matter that nullified the 2019 Presidential Election and received the Chatham House Prize for the year 2020.

 

His Lordship Justice John N. Katsala

Katsala

The Honourable Justice John N. Katsala was born on 14th November, 1964. He is married and has three children. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi (1989) and a Master of Laws degree in International Economic Law from University of Warwick, England (2007).

He first joined the Judiciary on 12th June, 1989 as a Resident Magistrate and later went on to work as a State Advocate and Legal Aid Advocate in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs before going into private legal practice. He was appointed Judge of the High Court on 20th March, 2003 and Justice of Appeal on 20th October, 2020.

 

Honourable Lady Justice Ivy Kamanga

Ivy Kamanga

The Honourable Justice Ivy C. Kamanga was born on 10th October, 1968. She is married and has children. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi (1992) and a Master of Laws degree from University of London, England (2009).

She started her career in 1992 as a Legal Aid Advocate and later worked as a State Advocate in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. In 1995, she joined the Judiciary as Senior Resident Magistrate and rose to the the ranks of Principal Resident Magistrate and Chief Resident Magistrate before being appointed Deputy Registrar, Senior Deputy Registrar and Registrar of the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal. She was appointed Judge of the High Court in 2004 and Justice of Appeal on 20th October, 2020.

She was a member of the panel of judges which sat on the constitutional matter that nullified the 2019 Presidential Election and received the Chatham House Prize for the year 2020.

She is a Judge of the Southern African Development Community Administrative Tribunal (SADCAT), an independent institution of SADC that sits in Gaborone

 

His Lordship Honourable Justice Mankhambira C.C. Mkandawire

Mkandawire

The Honourable Justice Mankhambira C.C. Mkandawire was born on 1st January 1961. He is married and has four children. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi (1986).

He joined the Judiciary in 1986 as a Resident Magistrate and rose to the ranks of Senior Resident Magistrate, Principal Resident Magistrate and Chief Resident Magistrate. He was later appointed Senior Deputy Registrar of the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal and then Chairperson of the Industrial Relations Court. He was appointed Judge of the High Court in 2004 and Justice of Appeal on 20th October, 2020.

Between the years 2006–2014, he worked as Registrar of the Southern African Development Community(SADC) Tribunal in Namibia.

 

His Lordship Honourable Justice Sylvester A. Kalembera

Kalembera

The Honourable Justice Sylvester A. Kalembera was born on 6th October, 1970. He is married and has three children. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi (1995) and a Master of Laws degree from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa (2010).

He joined public service as a Legal Aid Advocate on 21st August, 1995 and became Principal Legal Aid Advocate before he moved to the Department of Customs and Exercise as Principal Assistant Controller (Law) in 1998. He later became Principal Legal Officer at the Malawi Revenue Authority in 2000.

He joined the Judiciary as Principal Resident Magistrate on 17th August, 2000 and rose to the rank of Chief Resident Magistrate before he was appointed Deputy Registrar and later Registrar of the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal. He was appointed Judge of the High Court on 13th June, 2008. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Appeal Bench on 10th June, 2022.

 

His Lordship Honourable Justice Dingiswayo Madise

Madise

The Honourable Justice Dingiswayo Madise was born on 30th August, 1970. He is married and has children. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi (1998) and a Master of Laws from Queens University of Belfast (2004).

He joined the Judiciary as a Senior Resident Magistrate on 26th January, 1998. He rose to the ranks of Principal Resident Magistrate and Chief Resident Magistrate. He was appointed Judge of the High Court on 13th June, 2008.

He was a member of the panel of judges which sat on the constitutional matter that nullified the 2019 Presidential Election and received the Chatham House Prize for the year 2020. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Appeal Bench on 10th June, 2022.

 

His Lordship Honourable Justice Rowland S. Mbvundula

Mbvundula

The Honourable Justice Rowland Mbvundula was born on 14th December, 1964. He is married and has children. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi (1989).

He initially joined the Judiciary as a Resident Magistrate on 12th June, 1989 before joining the Lilongwe City Council as Town Clerk (Legal). In 1994, he joined the New Building Society (now NBS Bank) as in-house Legal Counsel, where he worked until 2003 before going into private legal practice. He was appointed Judge of the High Court on 13th June, 2008. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Appeal Bench on 10th June, 2022.

 

Honourable Lady Justice Dorothy nyaKaunda Kamanga

Nyakaunda Kamanga

The Honourable Justice Dorothy Kamanga was born on 6th October, 1970. She is married and has children. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi (1995) and a Master of Laws degree from University of Cape Town, South Africa (2013).

She started her career in 1995 in private legal practice before joining the public service as a Legal Aid Advocate. In the year 2000, she joined Women and Law in Southern Africa as a Research Associate. She joined the Judiciary as a Principal Resident Magistrate in 2003 before being appointed Deputy Registrar and later Registrar of the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal in 2008. She was appointed Judge of the High Court on 3rd October, 2012. She was appointed to the Supreme Court of Appeal Bench on 10th June, 2022.
