Magistrates have been called upon to uphold professionalism, integrity, transparency, and accountability in their work. The Honourable Deputy Chief Justice, Lovemore Paul Chikopa, SC, said this when he opened a training programme for magistrates on 23 October 2025 in Lilongwe.
The Deputy Chief Justice highlighted the pivotal role of magistrates, noting that about 95 per cent of judicial work is handled at the magisterial level. He also called on those in supervisory positions to ensure effective oversight and prompt handling of complaints.
The training, supported by Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI) and coordinated by the Judiciary Training Committee, focused on case management and equipping magistrates with skills to enhance justice delivery.
Justice Chikopa commended IRLI for its continued partnership with the Judiciary in promoting access to quality justice and strengthening capacity within Malawiโs Criminal Justice System.
โThe Judiciary, indeed, Malawi as a country, has immensely benefited from the various initiatives supported by Irish Rule of Law International. We can only say thank you very much,โ said Justice Chikopa.
The IRLI has been working in Malawi to improve access to justice for adults and children, and to strengthen institutional capacity, coordination and accountability throughout the criminal justice system since 2011.
