Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Meets The Honourable The Chief Justice Of The Republic Of Malawi

On 13th January 2023, the Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, His Excellency Long Zhou, paid a courtesy call on the Honourable the Chief Justice of the Republic of Malawi, His Lordship Rizine R. Mzikamanda, SC.

The Ambassador said he decided to pay a courtesy call on the Honourable the Chief Justice so that he could, personally, assure the Honourable the Chief Justice of the Chinese Government’s commitment to the agreement between the Chinese and Malawi Governments on the Chinese Government’s grant to Malawi for a feasibility study for the construction of the Judicial Complex in Lilongwe.  He said since the agreement was signed on 17th August 2022, he has been working tirelessly to push for the commencement of the project on the part of the Chinese Government. He informed the Honourable the Chief Justice that, to show his government’s commitment, the Chinese Government had so far already identified Consultants to do the feasibility studies. The Consultants have started their work by sending questionnaires on some pertinent technical questions to relevant Malawi Government departments, including Ministry of Finance, to solicit necessary information that will assist them to prepare thoroughly before traveling to Malawi to conduct the feasibility studies. The Ambassador also said the Chinese Government is working very hard to cultivate and promote mutual cooperation between the Governments of China and Malawi in all sectors, including Judicial functions.

The Honourable the Chief Justice said he was very pleased to receive the Ambassador at the Malawi Judiciary Headquarters. He said he was very pleased to learn about the efforts the Ambassador was making to hasten the Judicial Complex project, which was a big project for the Malawi Judiciary. He said the Malawi Judiciary had expected the project for a very long time. The Malawi Judiciary needs a new building. As such, it is committed to work very hard on the project and he, personally, had very high expectations that the Judicial Complex project will take place and will be finished quickly. He had confidence that the relevant Government officials will provide the necessary answers as quickly as possible. On the cultivation and promotion of mutual cooperation between the Chinese and Malawi Judiciaries, the Honourable the Chief Justice said that was a very welcome development. The Malawi Judiciary fully supports the development and would be pleased to learn more about the Chinese Judicial system.
