Malawi Judiciary on 27th – 28th January, 2025, attended the 8th Cairo High Level Meeting of the Chief Justices of the African Constitutional and Supreme Courts and Constitutional Councils held in New Cairo City in Egypt.
The meeting organized on the initiative of the Egyptian Supreme Constitutional Court, discussed current constitutional and legal issues, while promoting the exchange of ideas, visions and experiences between the continent’s constitutional institutions. Participants addressed a number of issues, including “the nature of dangers facing the African continent in exceptional circumstances”, “legislative procedures in the face of exceptional circumstances” and “reviewing the constitutionality of laws regulating exceptional situations”.
The meeting attracted participation of delegations from 35 African countries, 5 international organizations, and several European and Asian countries as observers. Malawi Judiciary was represented by a delegation led by the Honourable Deputy Chief Justice Lovemore Paul Chikopa, SC and his entourage included Honourable Justice of Appeal John Nelson Katsala, SC and the Court Administrator for the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal, Mr. James John Samuti.
