The Official Handover Of The Newly Built Likoma Magistrate Court And Sygmbolic Handover Of The Rehabilitated Balaka And Rumphi District Magistrate Courts

On 29 th September 2022, the Honourable the Chief Justice, His Lordship Rizine Mzikamanda, SC formally received the newly built Likoma Magistrate Court from the Head of the European Union Delegation in Malawi. Likoma Magistrate court was built under Chilungamo (Justice and Accountability) Programme with financial assistance from the 11 th European Development Fund. Chilungamo Programme started on 1 st August, 2017 and will come to the end on 31 st January, 2023. A total of 10 courts are a beneficiary of the rehabilitation initiative under the Programme. Rehabilitation works at Mulanje, Mwanza, Ntaja, Mchinji, Nkhotakota, Balaka and Chitipa courts were completed; works at Rumphi District Magistrate Court are at 95% while works at Dowa District Magistrate Court will commence before the end of this year. Rehabilitation works at Likoma commenced on the 18 th May, 2021 and came to completion on 29th September 2022. The handover ceremony was graced by the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, the Chairperson for Malawi Judiciary Development Programme, the Solicitor General and the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, the Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service, the Traditional Authority and the Member of Parliament for Likoma District among many other dignitaries. The construction and launch of Likoma District Magistrate Court is yet another milestone for the Judiciary in its quest to bring courts and indeed justice closer to people.
